The Alfa Romeo 1900, produced from 1950 to 1959, was the first car from the Italian marque to feature unitary body construction and the first Alfa Romeo produced on an assembly line.

Significantly, the 1900 also launched a new four-cylinder twin-camshaft engine that would become a mainstay for cars made in Portello for years to come.

The 1,884 cc engine featured an aluminium cylinder head with two chain-driven camshafts and produced 80 horsepower in its initial application.

Higher performance versions would achieve outputs up to 115 horsepower.

Launched as a saloon, a two-door, short-wheelbase “C” variant—for corto , or “short”—soon followed.

Alfa Romeo designed the saloon in-house but gave official contracts to coachbuilders, namely Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera and Pinin Farina, for the coupé and cabriolet models.
