Rolls-Royce’s reputation as one of the greatest car manufacturers, producing models intended to be the benchmark in luxury travel, was established by its 40/50 HP models.

The Silver Ghost was hugely successful, but increasing competition from companies such as Bentley led to the introduction of the New Phantom before the Phantom II was introduced in 1929.

Still powered by a 7.7-litre straight-six engine, but re-engineered with a new alloy cylinder head, the Phantom II could reach speeds of up to 160 km/h depending on specification.

Further improvements were made throughout the drivetrain.

Phantom IIs were finished in all manner of bodies, but arguably the most attractive appeared on the short-chassis Continental—a model aimed at owners who enjoyed driving and therefore preferred a sportier experience with stiffer springs.

In total, 281 Continentals left Rolls-Royce’s Derby factory.

Chassis 97 RY was tested on 6 February 1934, prior to delivery to its first owner Mr A.P.
