Launched in 1966, the 1600-2—or 1602 as it was later called—was based on a shortened BMW New Class chassis.

In 1967, a Cabriolet version was introduced, followed a year later by the introduction of the 2002, which brought with it a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 100 PS.

More than 420,000 2002s were built, with the rarest variant being the 2002 Cabriolet; launched in 1971 and on sale for eight months, just 200 of these special cars were ever created.

Bodied by Stuttgart-based Karosseriewerk Baur, the BMW 2002 Cabriolet is an extremely rare model that is highly sought-after by collectors today.

This 2002 left the factory on 31 March 1971 as one of the few Cabriolets powered by the 2.0-litre M10 engine.

It was delivered to BMW Meierrose of Osnabrück, with the first known owner registering this BMW on 14 January 1972.

He retained the car until January 1978.
