The Lancia Rally 037 occupies a unique place in rally history: It was the first car to win the World Rally Championship under the new Group B rules, and the last two-wheel drive car to ever win a WRC title.

Lancia had "broken the mold" in 1973 with the introduction of the Stratos HF—the first car designed specifically for Group 4 rally competition rather than being adapted from a standard production car.

As a result of other manufacturers taking advantage of the same strategy, in 1979, the FIA decided on a radical change in the entire competition classification system.

Instead of the old, numbered classification groups, new "lettered" groups would take over, and the newly-created Group B would contest the World Rally Championship, beginning with the 1982 season.

Although Group B homologation would only require 200 examples, the FIA did not manage to finalize the new rules until it was too late for manufacturers to develop entirely new Group B cars for the 1982 season, and the earli...
