AI Listing Summary

This 1938 Austin Goodwood Saloon, acquired in 1995 as a restoration project, presents a rewarding opportunity for classic car enthusiasts. While the body has been resprayed and the interior re-upholstered, the chassis requires alignment, electrics need improvement, and the gearbox has a synchromesh issue. However, it includes a replacement engine, spare parts, and relevant literature, making it a potentially useable pre-war classic upon completion.

Condition

The car requires chassis alignment, has electrics that need improvement, and a gearbox with synchromesh issues on third gear. While the body is in sound condition with new upholstery, headlining, and carpets, and a replacement engine has been fitted, the need for several repairs and improvements places it in the 'Good' category.

IFF18335 The steel-bodied Austin Goodwood was launched in August 1936, incorporating the new, smoother styling of the late 1930s, as Austin began to move away from the upright styling of its earlier cars.

Nominally a 14hp model, the 1711cc engine actually fell into the 16hp tax bracket.

Initially sharing the engine from the Light 12/6 15.9, after a few months a new engine was installed, giving a 20% increase in power – now up to 46bhp – and very good performance for a car in its class.

65mph was within reach, with easy cruising at 50mph and more, making these cars very useable in modern traffic.

Comfortable four-seaters, with rear footrests and window blinds for the rear seat passengers and a rare-for-the-time reach-adjustable steering column for the driver, the Goodwood saloon and cabriolet helped keep Austin at the forefront of the British car market. This 1938 Goodwood was acquired by the vendor’s l...
