Indeed, as the rest of the British Leyland leviathan was struggling, the Mini continued to be a rare shining light in the corporation’s line-up.
The arrival of the Metro in 1980, ostensibly to replace the Mini, actually had a beneficial effect on the older car; although production numbers were reduced, the Mini now gained a more modern and efficient drivetrain from the newer car, and the shared underpinnings helped prolong the Mini’s life.
