The 996, which shared similar engineering, had been on the scene for seven years; the engine remained at the rear, and as long as the tail still wagged the dog, the purest character of the 911 was still firmly intact.

But what the 997 did do was return to classic design principles – the Boxster-inspired “fried egg” headlights of the 996 were swapped out for more traditional, oval units reminiscent of traditional 911s.

The appearance was much more of a nod to the iconic 911 appearance, even though the mechanicals beneath remained largely unchanged.
