None of which is as important to us petrolheads as the fact that, from 1956 to 2008, the French leg of the World Rally Championship was held here – the legendarily fearsome Tour de Corse.
Renowned as the race of “10,000 corners”, this brutal rally was a true car-ender, with only the most nimble, reliable and robust machines having a chance of finishing well.
It was here in 1975 that Alpine’s A110 Berlinetta, hugely under-powered and not given a chance of a podium, managed to get within a whisker of snatching victory from Lancia’s iconic Stratos.
It remains one of the most impressive drives of the era.
