A renowned aeronautical engineer and the father of the Aérotrain project, Jean Bertin also turned his attention to the issues of urban congestion in the mid-1960s.

Convinced of the need to reduce the footprint of cars in city centers, he developed a unique prototype in 1965 based on a standard Renault 4: the R4 Bertin, sometimes nicknamed the “Mini 4L,” through his company, SAPELEM.
To achieve this, Bertin had the original chassis and body cut off behind the driver’s seats, drastically reducing the wheelbase and the vehicle’s overall length to just 2.34 meters (nearly 1.30 meters shorter than the Régie model), while taking care to retain the original tailgate and rear cargo space.
