Unveiled at the end of the 1980s, the fifth-generation Toyota Celica (ST185) is the basis for the manufacturer's WRC homologation.

An evolution of the GT-Four concept, it combines a turbocharged engine with permanent all-wheel drive.

Officially entered by Toyota Team Europe, this technical architecture quickly proved its effectiveness in competition.

It enabled driver Carlos Sainz to win the World Rally Championship twice, in 1990 and 1992.
In 1992, in order to homologate its Celica in Group A, Toyota launched the "Carlos Sainz" series, strictly limited to 5,000 units.

It featured an air/water heat exchanger and special bodywork (perforated hood, redesigned bumper) to optimize cooling.
