Its design is based on an extremely light central chassis-beam to which a fiberglass body is attached, an innovative solution that achieves low weight and remarkable rigidity for its time.

Under its long hood is a 1.6-liter twin-shaft four-cylinder developed from a Ford block, extensively reworked by Lotus.

Combined with its light weight, this engine gave the Elan exceptional performance and agility, quickly recognized both on the road and in competition.

The Lotus Elan S2 version, introduced in 1964, brought a number of technical and finishing improvements while retaining the original architecture.
