In 1960, Jean Rédélé decided to end production of the first Alpine, the A106, designed and built by the Chappe brothers and Gessalin, with the Alpine A108, built entirely on rue Pasteur in Dieppe, taking over.
His father-in-law, Charles Escoffier, who had a very good relationship with these Saint Maur coachbuilders, insisted on continuing the partnership.

Chappe and Gessalin then proposed a 2+2 coupé, less sporty than the berlinettes or cabriolets, but more livable: this would be the A108 coupé 2+2, presented in autumn 1960.

The wheelbase was that of the R8, a little longer than that of the berlinette, and the beam was bolted into the body rather than sealed in.
