Un vent nouveau souffle chez Maserati à l’entrée dans les années 1970.
En effet, souhaitant remplacer son modèle Sebring, la marque au Trident dévoile l’Indy en 1968 au Salon de Turin; le coup de crayon marque une nette différence avec sa prédécesseur et montre une belle interprétation de ce nouveau design aux lignes tendues, presque cubiques.
Le résultat donne un coupé racé et agressif avec feux escamotables et une ligne de toit assez haute pour pouvoir loger deux places supplémentaires par rapport à sa grande soeur la Maserati Gibhli.
Le dessin de la carrosserie est confié à Vignale qui se risque à proposer un hayon arrière incluant une vitre quasiment posée à plat qui donne à la voiture des airs de break et qui ne sut pas remporter le succès escompté mais qui aujourd’hui ne semble pas démodé.
