World War II devastated the taxi industry in England.
In 1947, Mann & Overton, Carbodies, and Austin joined forces to produce a new taxi: the "FX3".
Initially supplied with a petrol engine, it received a Ferguson diesel engine in 1952.
In 1954, Austin developed its own 2.2 litre diesel engine.
Like its predecessors, it is characterized by a comfortable space reserved for the passengers and isolated from the driver.
Luggage was placed to the left of the driver's seat.
The "FX4" made its debut in 1958.
It succeeded the FX3, but kept most of the FX3's (and pre-war taxis') features: a separate chassis, a "luggage compartment" to the left of the driver, a large volume for customers, "suicide" rear doors opening at 90°, the famous 25-foot turning radius, etc.
New features include hydraulic brakes, folding seats for two additional passengers, and separate (front/rear) heating and lighting controls.
