Alejandro De Tomaso, ancien mécanicien et pilote de l’écurie Osca des frères Maserati, fonde sa propre marque éponyme en 1959.

C’est à Modène, berceau de l’automobile italienne de prestige que le nouveau constructeur voit le jour.

Produite à partir de 1971, la Pantera est l’alliance d’une belle carrosserie italienne signée des Studio GHIA et d’un puissant et robuste V8 Ford 5,8 l développant 310 cv.

La motorisation n’offre pas les vocalises d’un V12 italien mais donne à la Pantera une puissance bien supérieure à ses rivales de l’époque : la Dino 246 GT ou la Porsche 911 2,4 S, tout en bénéficiant de la fiabilité et de l’entretien aisé d’un bloc éprouvé.
