Le projet Viper est née à la fin 1988 dans les Advanced Design Studios de Chrysler.
Elle fut présentée pour la première fois au public à Détroit en 1989.
La réaction fut tellement positive que Bob Lutz, le PDG de Chrysler, décida de commercialiser la Viper.
Avec ses 400 chevaux et 630Nm de couple et sa boîte manuelle à 6 vitesses, la Viper était et est encore un véritable dragster.
John Hennessey débuta sa carrière en courant en compétition avec sa Mitsubishi 3000GT, modifiée par ses soins.
En 1991 il monte sa société, Hennessey Performance Engineering et c'est en 1994 qu'il commence à préparer des Dodge Viper.
La première s'appellera Venom 500 et le client qui l'avait fait modifier par HPE gagnera dès sa première course dans le Nevada.
Le bouche à oreille faisant son travail, la demande augmente et Hennessey ne se consacre alors plus qu'aux modifications...
