An ‘S’ for ‘Super’ iteration of the Porsche front-engined design that began with the 924, Porsche introduced the 944 S in late 1986 as a more advanced version of its popular 944.

The model featured a 2.5-litre DOHC 16-valve engine producing 190bhp, along with chassis upgrades inspired by the 944 Turbo; improved suspension, larger anti-roll bars and stronger components.

Reported to have been capable of 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds at launch and with a 144mph top speed, the 944 S sold 12,936 units worldwide, with the majority delivered to the USA.
