In 1984, Mercedes followed up the long-lived and hugely popular W123 saloon with the far more modern, aerodynamically-styled W124.
Like its predecessor, the W124 saloon spawned a more stylish 2 door coupe a few years later.
With shallower raked front and rear screens and pillarless side-windows, the Bruno Sacco-designed coupe shared few body parts with the saloon.
However, despite being a touch shorter, under the skin sat the same over-engineered mechanicals as the saloon.
This meant that it shared the multi-link independent rear suspension that further improved the handling characteristics compared with the previous models, plus a shock absorber strut independent front suspension located by individual wishbones.
