The Saab 99, launched in 1968, was a groundbreaking model that marked a turning point for the Swedish automaker, moving the brand upmarket and establishing its reputation for innovation and safety.

Designed by Sixten Sason, the 99 introduced a modern, aerodynamic body with a wraparound windshield, deep side windows, and Saab’s characteristically high safety standards, including a strong safety cage and energy-absorbing bumpers.

Initially powered by a 1.7-litre inline-four developed with Triumph, the 99 later received Saab’s own robust engines, including the 2.0-litre unit and, most notably, the world’s first production turbocharged engine in the 1978 Saab 99 Turbo.

Produced until 1984, the 99 bridged the gap between the smaller Saab 96 and the later 900, cementing Saab’s identity as a manufacturer of safe, innovative, and distinctly individual cars.
