Mazda’s MX5 needs little introduction.

Introduced in 1989, long after the rest of the automotive industry had seemingly given up on 2-seater roadsters, the little Mazda channelled cars like the Lotus Elan and MGB but with modern, reliable underpinnings.

The front engine, rear drive layout promised 50/50 weight distribution and benign oversteer biased handling.

A buzzy 1.6 litre twin cam engine and low weight made it nippy and nimble.

It was a massive sales success and 3 more generations followed, sticking closely to the original formula.

The MX5 was not sold as a Mazda in Japan but marketed under the banner of its sub-brand Eunos.

This car, like many early MX5s that you see, was originally sold in Japan and brought over to the UK sometime later - in this case, arriving here in 1999.
