The Austin Metro, introduced in 1980, was a huge success for British Leyland, and later Austin Rover, but by the late 80s it was getting a little tired and struggling to stand its ground against newer competitors.

The Austin brand had been abandoned in 1987 and, initially, the humble Metro wasn’t deemed worthy of a Rover badge.

However, in 1990 the new Rover Metro was launched with a fresh set of engines, the venerable A-series being replaced by the all-new K-series.

The rest of the car was a facelift and upgrade of the old model.

This was enough to reinvigorate the Metro and win it the What Car? Car of the Year award in 1991.

A further facelift in late 1994 brought styling changes which incorporated the Rover family grille, a new diesel engine option and a name change to Rover 100.

Only 3 years later, in December 1997, the model was finally retired with direct replacement.
