Background:
Introduced in 2001, the R230-generation Mercedes-Benz SL combined the traditional appeal of the marque's flagship two-seat roadster with a folding metal roof, extensive electronic systems and sophisticated chassis technology.

At the top of the range sat the SL65 AMG, powered by AMG's 5,980cc twin-turbocharged V12 producing 612bhp and 1,000Nm of torque.

Drive was transmitted to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission, whilst AMG-specific suspension, braking and chassis developments helped accommodate the considerable performance available.
The later SL65 AMG Black Series took the concept considerably further, gaining significantly wider bodywork, extensive weight-saving measures and a substantial increase in performance.

Produced in limited numbers, it has since become one of the most recognisable AMG models of the period.
