Description
Launched in 2000, the E46 M3 continued the evolution of the original E30 M3 from the 1980s.
While the E30 had been developed primarily to dominate the European Touring Car Championship, the E36 evolved into a more refined and capable grand tourer.
The E46 marked a return to the muscular wide-body styling of the original, with flared wheel arches, a chassis developed by BMW M Division and the superb high-revving S54 straight-six engine.
The result was one of the finest driver's cars of its generation.
The combination of rear-wheel drive, near-perfect weight distribution, communicative steering and the free-revving S54 gave the E46 M3 a driving character that has become increasingly difficult to replicate in the turbocharged era.
Equally at home on the road or circuit, it struck a remarkable balance between everyday usability and genuine performance.
