Background:
By the autumn of 1991, with Porsche struggling financially and in need of fresh ideas, senior figures travelled to the Tokyo Motor Show in search of inspiration.
The company was facing declining sales of the 928 and preparing to launch the 968, itself a heavily reworked version of the 944.
In February 1992 Porsche began work on a completely new model to replace the ageing 928 and to stand alongside the newly launched 968.
The result was the Porsche Boxster, a mid-engine two seat roadster that marked an important turning point for the brand.
It was the first Porsche since the 914 to be conceived from the outset as a roadster.
The first-generation Boxster, known as the 986, arrived in late 1996 powered by a 2.5 litre flat-six engine.
Its design was closely based on the Boxster concept that had wowed audiences at the 1993 Detroit Motor Show.
In 2000 the entry level car was upgraded with a larger 2.7-litre engine while Porsche introduced the more powerful Boxster S, fitted...
