The R230 generation Mercedes-Benz SL was launched in 2001 following a lengthy development programme that focused heavily on combining advanced engineering with luxury grand touring capability.
Designed as a flagship open-top model, the SL adopted a fully retractable hardtop roof system and a highly sophisticated chassis architecture, giving it both coupé like refinement and convertible usability in a single platform.
At launch, it was widely regarded as one of the most advanced roadsters Mercedes had ever produced, with styling defined by clean, sculpted surfaces and a restrained but purposeful stance.
The SL55 AMG arrived shortly after the model’s introduction and immediately established itself as one of the defining performance cars of its era.
Powered by AMG’s hand assembled 5.4-litre supercharged V8 engine, it produced approximately 493bhp and 520lb/ft of torque, delivered through a 5-speed automatic transmission with AMG Speedshift calibration.
