The Lotus Esprit Turbo SE was introduced in 1989 as the most powerful and fastest accelerating Esprit to date, powered by a charge-cooled 2.2-litre turbocharged engine producing 264bhp.
Performance was astonishing for the period, with 0–60mph in around 4.7 seconds and a top speed of up to 165mph.
It proved immediately popular, with 563 cars produced in its first year, making it one of the best-selling Esprit variants.
By 1992, the model had evolved to include revisions such as a larger, more usable cabin, wider-opening doors and the distinctive ‘high-wing’ rear spoiler, introduced to improve stability and rear visibility.
With no major changes to the drivetrain throughout production, the SE retained its well-proven mechanical package, combining strong performance with the handling and ride characteristics for which Lotus is well known.
