Alejandro de Tomaso had a bold vision for Maserati when he acquired the ailing manufacturer in 1976, with a strategy focussing on a more affordable sports car range called Biturbo.

As implied, the Biturbo had a twin-turbocharged V6 engine of Maserati's own design, and in 1984 Zagato was commissioned to develop a Spyder variant.

The wheelbase was shortened by some 114mm to create a strict two-seater with compact proportions, and with a manual transmission and endless torque from the world's first production twin turbocharged engine, the Spyder lived up to the famous trident badge.
