Background The story began in 1992 with a family-friendly Lancer saloon that someone at Mitsubishi decided to equip with the 244hp / 228lb ft 4G63T 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and AWD drivetrain from the Galant VR-4—a highly credible world rally car developed over two decades on the world’s rally stages.

244hp was a substantial amount of power in the early 1990s, so that first road-going Lancer Evolution made quite a statement.

Some say that 5,000 first-generation Evos were produced exclusively for the Japanese market, while others claim the figure was 2,500.

Whatever the number, they all sold within the first three days of release.

Mitsubishi introduced the Lancer Evolution IX in Japan on 3 March 2005 and exhibited the car at the Geneva Motor Show for the European market on the same day.

The North American markets saw the model showcased at the New York International Auto Show the following month.
