Background The W123 Mercedes-Benz series was introduced in 1975.

It was a hit from the beginning and with first-year production restricted, cars started to be changed hands on the secondary market for several thousand Deutschmarks over list price.

One of Mercedes-Benz’ most recognisable and well-loved designs, the W123 (and the C123 coupé derivative seen here, which was introduced in 1977) soon developed a reputation for bulletproof reliability – it’s arguably one of the most solidly engineered cars there’s ever been.

This means that even today the W123 series is a fantastic classic car buy.

In the spring of 1977, a coupé version was introduced on a shortened wheelbase versus the saloon.

The C123 was available as 230C (later 230CE) and as 280C and 280CE in most markets.
