Background: The Ford Escort XR3i finds its roots in the battle of the hot-hatches, Ford trying to take the fight to VW’s mighty new Golf GTi.
The MKIV being one last swing before the completely new fifth generation.
Initially featuring a tuned version of the 1.6-litre CVH engine fitted with a twin-choke Weber carburettor, uprated suspension and numerous cosmetic alterations.
It lacked a 5-speed transmission and fuel-injection.
Fuel-injection finally arrived in October 1982 creating the XR3i.
