Background: The Fiat Dino Coupé was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1967, six months after the convertible version had made its debut in Turin.
While the soft top Spyder was styled by Pininfarina, the svelte coupé looked considerably different.
It had been designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone and then finished by his replacement Marcelo Gandini, after Giugiaro left for Ghia.
Remarkably, this stylish duo were, to all intents and purposes, perhaps the very first ‘homologation specials’ ever made.
Ferrari needed to produce 500 vehicles using its 2-litre V6 so that it could be used for the Scuderia’s Formula 2 racing cars but at that time, Enzo’s company had nowhere near the production capacity to fulfil the task, so a deal was struck with Fiat to manufacture the cars.
The concept of the 2-litre 65° V6 engine is credited to Ferrari’s son, Alfredo (‘Dino’), who had died tragically young in 1956 and the cars carried his name as a result, along with Ferrari’s own 206 Din...
