Vehicle Details

AI Listing Summary

This is a rare, Hooper-bodied 1936 Daimler DE 36 limousine with historical significance, once used as the Mayoral car for Birmingham City Council. However, it's a 'barn find' in need of complete restoration, lacking an MOT and requiring trailering, which significantly impacts its current condition and market value.

Condition

The car is described as a 'barn find' with no MOT, suggesting it has been stored for a long time and is not currently roadworthy. The listing explicitly states that it has not been moved for some time and will need trailering away, potentially requiring a winch, pointing to mechanical issues and/or significant deterioration due to storage. Cosmetically, being a barn find, it's likely to have wear and tear, although specific details are not provided. Therefore, it requires substantial reconditioning.

BARN FINDNo MOT - Historic VehicleShowing mileage of 15,434 (Unwarranted milage recorded in 1961 of 84,000 miles)
Bodied by Hooper & Co, London-based carriage makers to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, and arguably the finest of all British coachbuilders.
The car was delivered new to Birmingham City Council for use as the Mayoral car- where it remained in civic use until 1961.
It was then sold to the Birmingham Co-operative Society and thereafter into private ownership.
It is believed to be one of an exceptionally low production number of such Limousine Hooper-built DE 36s, produced by Daimler.

A letter in the history file suggests possibly only two- the other having been built for HM King George VI..
Having a 5.4 litre straight-eight petrol engine, the car cost £6137 when delivered new- equivalent to £225000 in 2025!
With a glass partition, walnut interior, extra fold down seats and plush upholstery- the car was quite literally 'fit for a King'.
