Retaining the 1,600cc fuel-injected CVH engine, the S2 benefits from the fitment of a water-cooled Garrett T3 turbocharger, alongside revised engine management, an improved KE-Jetronic fuel injection system and a larger intercooler.

Further enhancements included lower overall gearing, an uprated gearbox incorporating a limited-slip differential, and a larger clutch.

Suspension and chassis revisions comprising stiffer springs, uprated anti-roll bars, mechanical ABS, and larger brakes resulted in a car that was not only more composed but also more exploitable in everyday driving conditions.
