The second generation of the Volkswagen Golf and the successor to the Mk.
I Golf, was launched in Europe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1983.
Sales began in its homeland and most other left hand drive markets soon after and debuted in March 1984 on the right hand drive British market.
It was Volkswagen's highest volume seller from 1983 and ended (German) production in late 1992, to be replaced by the Golf Mk.
III.
The Mk.
II was larger than the Mk.
I, its wheelbase grew slightly by three inches, as did exterior dimensions.
Weight was up accordingly by about 130kg.
Exterior design, developed in-house by Volkswagen design director Schäfer, kept the general lines of its Giugiaro-designed predecessor, but was slightly more rounded.
