Unveiled in September 1973, the Beetle Jeans Edition was intended to spice up the old Bug’s image, to appeal to a younger audience, helped by its association with the hippie movement and surf culture of the 1960s.
Volkswagen’s design was, by then, 35 years old, and while in hindsight there were plenty more years of production to be had, Volkswagen was conscious that the model needed a shot in the arm to ensure continued popularity.
All Jeans Editions were painted in the very evocative ‘Tunis Gelb’, while the previously chrome-plated elements on the standard Beetle were painted black.
The Jeans also features a black decal along the side, with a very 70s ‘Jeans’ script.
More importantly, it gained the denim interior with yellow stitching that gave this limited edition its name.
