The Jaguar XK120 was produced from 1948 to 1954 and marked Jaguar’s return to sports car manufacturing after the war, its first since the SS100 ended production in 1940.
Unveiled as a show car at the 1948 London Motor Show, the XK120 was originally intended to showcase Jaguar’s new XK engine.
Its stunning reception persuaded founder Sir William Lyons to put it into full production.
The “120” denoted its remarkable 120mph top speed, making it the fastest standard production car in the world at launch.
Initially offered as an open roadster, the XK120 range expanded to include a Fixed Head Coupé in 1951 and a Drophead Coupé in 1953.
At its heart was the advanced 3.4-litre twin overhead-cam straight-six XK engine, featuring an alloy cylinder head and twin SU carburettors.
This robust and sophisticated design later evolved into 3.8- and 4.2-litre forms, remaining in production well into the 1980s.
