Unveiled at the 1959 London Motor Show, the new all-alloy V8 engine transformed both the Bentley S2 and its sister model, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II.
Producing approximately 200bhp — though the company modestly described it as “adequate” — the lightweight 6.2-litre unit delivered noticeably improved smoothness and performance without increasing overall weight.
Paired with Rolls-Royce’s four-speed automatic transmission and now-standard power steering, the result was effortless, refined motoring.
At the top of the range sat the S2 Continental, the most prestigious chassis specification.
While visually similar to the standard S2, the Continental benefited from upgraded brakes and a higher rear axle ratio, making it faster, quieter and better suited to sustained high-speed European touring.
