Maserati launched its first Quattroporte back in 1963 and has continued to make a version of this luxury four-door sports saloon ever since.
The fourth-generation model came out in 1994 and was the first Maserati to be produced under new owners Fiat, who had bought this illustrious Italian marque from Alejandro de Tomaso in 1993.
An evolution of the Biturbo platform, the Quattroporte IV was styled by Marcello Gandini (of Lamborghini Miura and Countach fame) and featured his signature slashed rear wheel arch design which had first been seen on the Countach and later on the Maserati Shamal.
Initially powered by the 280bhp twin-turbo 24-valve 2.8 V6 from the Ghibli, the Quattroporte IV got the flagship Shamal engine in 1996, a 336bhp twin-turbo 3.2 V8 which gave it blistering performance, 0-60 in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 168mph.
A Getrag six-speed manual gearbox came as standard, but a more town-friendly ZF four-speed automatic was also available as an option.
