By 1917, the Studebaker management had decided it was time to break completely from the old designs and to build a completely new line of motor cars which would satisfy a broad range of demand worldwide.
In May, after suitable reorganisation under the leadership of Fred Zeder work was started on three new models: the Light Four, Light Six and the Big Six.
In 1920, the Light Six was rebranded the Special Six.
Although the Special Six was always overshadowed by its big brother, the Big Six, it was every bit well engineered and constructed.
Except for the parts required for the larger bore of the Big Six virtually all the engine parts, accessories and chassis components are identical on both cars.
A major engine and gearbox redesign at the end of 1924 for EQ model resulted in the ultimate Special Six engine, the compression ratio was increased from 4.1 to 4.45 with the result that the developed horsepower of the engine was increased to 65HP.
