Legendary racing driver Gerry Marshall was the man who helped take Vauxhall to the front of the grid in saloon car racing during the early seventies, firstly using a Vauxhall Viva which by 1969 had a two litre slant four overhead camshaft engine.

At that time Gerry Johnstone a race preparation expert had joined the team and the combination of the two Gerry's was very successful.

Dealer Team Vauxhall (DTV) was formed in January 1971 by a group of London based Vauxhall dealers who decided to circumvent any opposition from GM or Vauxhall on track, by this time the team used the new Firenza coupé and a range of specialized racing engines were developed over the following few years with Tecalemit fuel injection and special cylinder heads with capacities between 2.0 and 2.6 litres.
