To counter the Austin-Healey Sprite budget sports car from their then arch-rivals BMC, Triumph rushed out the Spitfire, which was essentially an open two-seater version of the Herald saloon, employing the same 1,147cc engine, chassis and swing-axle rear suspension.

Styled by Michelotti, the Spitfires Mk.

I to V were made from 1962 to 1980.

Pitched against the MGB GT, a 1,998cc six-cylinder Vitesse-engined Spitfire with a Fastback Coupé body, the GT6, was introduced in 1966.

The 1968-1970 GT6 Mk.

II had improved rear suspension and the Mk.

III Spitfire's higher bumpers, whilst the improved 1970-1973 GT6 Mk.

III with Spitfire Mk.

IV styling ended the line.
