Launched at the Olympia Motor Show in October 1926, the Riley 9 was a benchmark ‘Light Car’ design.

With its advanced ‘twin-cam’ OHV 1087cc four-cylinder powerplant, low centre of gravity and fabric coachwork, the newcomer went, stopped and steered better than many, larger engined machines.

Closer in performance to a Bentley than a Bullnose, the compact Riley proved unsurprisingly popular among sporting motorists with specialised versions such as the Brooklands proving highly effective race cars.

Arriving during 1931, the Plus Ultra Series featured a revised ‘double dropped’ chassis which located its occupants between the axles to the benefit of ride / roadholding.

Available with a choice of open or closed coachwork, it helped cement Riley’s pre-eminence in the 9hp market.According to a letter on...
