Mercedes-Benz introduced the CL-Class line of grand touring coupés in 1992, beginning with the first-generation C140 model, designed by Bruno Sacco and produced until 1998.

Based on the W140 saloon platform, the models were initially known as the 500 SEC and the 600 SEC, then the S500 and the S600, before the CL designation was decided upon in 1996.

Three basic models were produced (not including high-performance AMG variants), all of which were limited to 155mph.

There was the entry-level CL 420 with the 4.2-litre V8, producing 275bhp at 5,700rpm; the CL 500 with five-litre V8, producing 322bhp at 5,600rpm; and the CL 600 with the six-litre V12, producing 389bhp at 5,200rpm.
