Thanks to its bonnet-mounted headlights, the original Sprite quickly became known as the ‘Frogeye’.

The one-piece bonnet covered a mildly tuned, twin carburettor, 43bhp 948cc BMC `A’ series engine with suspension by coil springs and wishbones up front, rear quarter elliptic springs and lever arm dampers all round.

Today, the Sprite is considered one of the best-handling sports cars of its time with many still finding use in competition events internationally.
