In 1974, on a trip to South Africa, Wilhelm Karmann Jr.
noticed a Jurgens motorhome, a design launched in 1973, built on a Volkswagen Type 2 chassis.
He was so taken by it that he requested licensed production.
The first motorhome produced by Karmann was also based on the Volkswagen Type 2 chassis and launched in 1974.
The bodies of these early Karmann’s were of a sandwich structure with kitchen, shower, two beds, grey water tank, secondary battery, toilet, hot water heater and gas heating.
An optional luggage rack could be sited over the cab.
Far ahead of rivals in terms of build quality, the coachbuilt Karmanns gained a devout following.
