Brainchild of Mercedes-Benz engineer Erich Waxenberger, and introduced in March, 1968, it combined the 6.3-litre M100 V8 and automatic transmission from the mighty Mercedes-Benz 600 with the more discreet W109 saloon body, creating one of the fastest production four-door cars of its era.

Mercedes-Benz recorded output at 250bhp, and period performance figures helped cement the model’s reputation as a true autobahn express.
