A riposte to the diminutive BMC Spridget duo, the Triumph Spitfire was launched in 1962.

Based around a truncated Herald chassis, it was equipped with all-round independent suspension (double wishbone front / swing-axle rear), disc / drum brakes and rack and pinion steering.

Styled by Michelotti, its wonderfully sleek two-door roadster bodyshell featured a clam-shell bonnet and decent boot.

Evolved through five guises over the course of its eighteen-year production run, the MK3 variant arrived in January 1967.

Fitted with an enlarged 1296cc OHV four-cylinder engine, it proved the fastest Spitfire yet.

Visually distinguished by its front grille-bisecting bumper (a sop to US safety legislation), the newcomer also sported a wooden instrument panel and one-piece convertible hood.
