Studebaker, a long-established South Bend wagon maker, moved into cars in the early 1900s and by 1911 had become the Studebaker Corporation.

After introducing its first mass-produced six-cylinder in 1913, Studebaker phased out fours by 1920.

The 1926 Model ER exemplified their modern construction: a six-cylinder, side-valve 242 cu in (4.0 L) engine with four main bearings producing 50 bhp at 2,200 rpm, three-speed manual transmission with shaft drive, four-wheel brakes, electric starting and lighting, and a sturdy steel chassis.

It was offered in several body styles (touring, sedan and coupe) and aimed at the dependable mid-priced market.
