Alec Issigonis, who had been working for Alvis, was recruited by the head of BMC Leonard Lord to design a technically advanced family car to complement their existing conventional models.

Its space-saving transverse engine, integrated sump transmission and front wheel drive allowed 80% of the car’s floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage, influencing a generation of future car designers.

The production version of the Mini was demonstrated to the press in April 1959, and by August, several thousand cars had been produced ready for dispatch to the dealers.

An immediate hit, it’s arguably one of the most influential British cars ever produced, and its model name has become the generic term for small cars.
