Initially, it was offered as a saloon, coupé, convertible or Touring estate, but in 1994 BMW broke new ground by introducing the short-wheelbase Compact hatchback variant—the first hatchback ever offered in the 3 Series range, and uniquely featuring semi-trailing arm rear suspension derived from the previous E30 generation to save space in the rear (other E36s having a multilink set-up).

Not including the M models, the range spanned everything from a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine to a 2.8-litre six, plus a smattering of diesel models.
